UP has agreed to release water for the Delhi's treatment plant in return for additional power
The Uttar Pradesh government has finally agreed to release 210 cusecs of water for the Sonia Vihar water plant in Delhi. According to UP Irrigation Minister Manoranjan Ahmed, by June 30 Delhi will get upto 300 cusecs of water.
Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit has welcomed the move since the two states have been locked in discussions over water for a long time.
UP has agreed to release water for the Delhi's parched treatment plant in return for additional power to tide over the present crisis in the state. Uttar Pradesh and the Centre reached an agreement to this effect on Saturday. The Sonia Vihar plant was set up at a cost of Rs 800 crore in December 2004 but has been non-functional ever since.
Two Cumex (cubic metre per second) of additional water was released for the plant on Saturday, a day after state Power Minister Shivpal Yadav discussed the power crisis faced by the state with the Union Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde.
Irrigation Minister Merajuddin reportedly issued orders for releasing water for the treatment plant.The State agreed at the meeting that Ganganahar canal near Modinagar will maintain a supply line for the Sonia Vihar. Water will be released to Delhi in a phased manner over May and June.
Now, draw water from auto-kiosks
After milk, Delhi citizens will soon be able to draw potable water from automated kiosks - for Rs1.50 — Rs2 a litre. The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) in collaboration with Delhi Jal Board (DJB) plans to set up the first such kiosk by August 2006. "We will provide water free from any bacteriological contamination that meets all quality standards," Ashok Jaitly of TERI said.
