PATNA: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Sunday removed the Sheikhpura District Magistrate, the DIG and SP after a visit to Mannipur village where seven persons were killed late on Saturday night by the suspected Ashok Mahto gang, apparently in retaliation to Thursday's killing of nine people by the rival Akhilesh Singh gang at neighbouring Goachak
village in Nalanda district.

Inspector-General of Police (Headquarters) Anil Sinha told reporters that seven persons -- one woman, two men and four children -- were killed in an attack on the village by the Ashok Mahto gang. While six had died on the spot, a five-year-old boy succumbed to his injuries during treatment.

The dead have been identified as Narendra  Chaurasia (52) Dharmendra Chaurasia (20), Renu Devi (35), Suraj (5), Saurav (5), Pintu (8) and Sintu (12).

Sources put the death toll at nine.

The village where the carnage took place belonged to Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's constituency from where he recently resigned as member of the Lok Sabha and provided an opportunity to the Opposition RJD, Congress and CPI-ML (Liberation) to train their guns at the National Democratic Alliance government in the state.

Reacting strongly to the incident, the CM on return from Mannipur village ordered the removal of the Deputy Inspector General of Police (Munger range), Sheikhpura District Magistrate and Superintendent of Police in connection with the incident.
