NEW DELHI: Contrary to the tall claims of the political leadership of imposing OBC quotas from this session, premier educational institutes will not go for reserving seats this year.
There are three reasons for this. The admission process for the IITs, IIMs and MBBS are almost complete. The government has also not issued any notification to these institutions regarding reservations. The directors of these institutions say they have no infrastructure to handle more students.
MBBS results have been declared. IIT results will be out on May 31. The admission process of IIMs was over by March and the process for next year - 2007-08 - will begin in June 2006, which means next year is also ruled out. Central universities have also started their admission process. While the matter is still being debated in the HRD ministry and Parliament, top educational institutions say they have no official word on quota. "Till date we have no communication from the government," said UGC chairman Sukhdev Thorat. Any change in the admission list now would mean facing litigation.
Reacting strongly to the government's move, IIM-Ahmedabad Director Bakul Dholakia said his plate is full, hence, no increase of seats as of now. "IIM-A in a massive expansion plan has increased its seats from 180 in 2002 to 400 by 2007. At this juncture our plate is totally full," said Dholakia. Officials of other IIMs say that they do not have the infrastructure and the faculty to accommodate more students. Dholakia said the institute spends around Rs 3.5 lakh per student to accommodate and educate them.
