McCartney's children are said to be privately relieved at the break-up though upset that their father is unhappy.

LONDON: Former Beatle, Sir Paul McCartney faces Britain's biggest divorce battle over his £825 million fortunes now that his marriage to model-cum-charity campaigner Heather Mills is officially over.

Legal experts are speculating that Lady McCartney could walk away with as much as £200 million of the pop singer's fortune — a staggering £1 million for every week of her four year marriage.

A month short of his 64th birthday, Sir Paul is 25 years older than his 38-year-old wife, and Heather has often been dubbed by the media as a gold-digger who latched on to the bereaved Beatle when he was mourning the early death of his first wife Linda from breast cancer.

After announcing their separation, Sir Paul felt the need to deny the allegations in an extraordinary statement insisting that there was ‘not an ounce of truth' in suggestions that Heather married him for his money. Heather claims that she offered to sign a prenuptial agreement before the marriage to protect McCartney's fortune, but Sir Paul apparently refused to draw one up because it was ‘too unromantic'.

The pop icon's fortune is estimated at £825 million. Last year alone he earned £48.5 million from album sales and a successful North American tour. His fortune was boosted with another £138 million he inherited from his late wife Linda.

Sir Paul's children Mary, 36, Stella, 33 and James, 28 from his first marriage are said to be privately relieved at the break-up though upset that their father is unhappy. They have never warmed to their new stepmother.

Heather has not enjoyed a good relationship with the press either, whom she has blamed for the death of her marriage. The joint statement announcing the break-up said they ‘found it increasingly difficult to maintain a normal relationship with constant intrusion into our private lives'. The media has been speculating a split for months, and are now gloating after being vindicated.

It is very obvious that they are firmly on Sir Paul's side who is being projected as the romantic, idealist taken for a ride by a shrewd, money-grabbing younger woman. How much Heather finally walks away with remains to be seen.
