NEW DELHI: Cops reinvestigating the Jessica Lal case called model turned actor Shayan Munshi's bluff that he didn't know Hindi by revealing that the entire interrogation session was conducted in Hindi. Munshi was interrogated by the Special investigative Team (SIT) of Delhi Police on May 15 after his arrest at Kolkata airport while trying to leave the country despite lookout notice against him. "Shayan Munshi knows Hindi very well and he speaks it fluently," said a cop from SIT.
The model turned actor had turned hostile in the court saying he did not know Hindi and the initial FIR (filed in Hindi) that identified the prime accused Manu Sharma, was filed by cops. His retraction of his own statement before the court severely affected the prosecution and went in favour of the accused.
Munshi, who after the incident went on to act in Hindi films, still maintained that he did not know the language. However his bluff was called when the SIT sleuths interrogated him in Hindi. "Initially he replied in English but when we insisted that we did not know English he switched to Hindi," said a SIT officer.
Cops also revealed that during the interrogation his wife Piya Ray Chaudhary spoke more than Shayan. "He spoke only when we forced him to, otherwise it was his wife who was defending their attempt to leave the country," said the officer.
Munshi was arrested at Kolkata airport on May 13 trying to fly out of the country along with his wife despite look out notice against him. After he got bail from Kolkata court he was brought to Delhi for further interrogation by the SIT. Earlier, he has been questioned twice by the SIT on his retraction of statement and the two gun theory introduced by him.
