Medical body calls for identity of plain-clothes men involved in action.

The Association of Medical Consultants (AMC) has demanded action against police officers who used "excessive force" on protesting medical students. It has also called for identification of the "plain-clothes" men involved in the lathicharge. Twelve doctors representing the AMC and the Indian Medical Association's (IMA) Mumbai (west) branch met on Wednesday to discuss their future course of action.

Dr Lalit Kapoor, managing trustee of AMC said, "The police hit unarmed young men  without provocation. We want to know the identities of the cops in plainclothes who were hitting students. We are not satisfied with the suspension of senior police inspector Madhukar Sankhe."  AMC treasurer Dr S Kate, whose two daughters took part in the protest, said, "The police brutally attacked students and even chased those fleeing." Dr Vinay Saraf, president of IMA's Mumbai (west) branch, said, "We do not support reservation at any level. Financial support like waiver of fees and hostel accommodation should be given depending on economic status of students, but there should be no compromise on merit."

Meanwhile, Girish Talwar and Vijay Nair, two youngsters who took part in Saturday's protest, were questioned for the whole day at the Nagpada police station before being finally let off on Wednesday night.

Joint Commissioner of Police Arup Patnaik said, "We are probing the involvement of these two. They don't have a criminal record, but they are not medicos or even students. They were also not part of any political party. It foxes us how so many students came on the streets on their call."

Girish is a bass player for rock band Zero while Nair is a band manager. The two got involved in the anti-reservation issue through the blog yfemumbai.blogspot.com.
