NEW DELHI: Girls once again outshined boys in the Indian School Certificate Examinations, the results for which were declared here on Wednesday, with a pass percentage of 96 for Class X and 93 for Class XII.

A total of 91,781 students had appeared for the Class X exam this year from 1,277 schools including four schools abroad, said Rita Wilson, Deputy Secretary of ISCE. Wilson added that of them, 88,114 students got through the test, a success rate of 96 per cent.

The successful candidates include 49,277 boys and 38,837 girls.

For Class XII, out of 43,034 students from 586 schools, 40,249 candidates, including 22,201 boys and 18,048 girls cleared the exam, a pass percentage of 93.

The pass percentage of girls in the Class X exam was 96.9, compared to 95.29 among boys. A similar trend was seen in the Class XII exam, with the pass percentage for girls 95.96 as against 91 among boys.

"The result shows that girls have done better than the boys despite the fact that their ratio being 44 girls to 56 boys in our schools," Wilson said.

The highest percentage of marks secured in the Class X exam was 97.6 and that in Class XII was 98.25 per cent.

Wilson did not disclose the names of the toppers, saying that it was against the "policy of the organisation".

While 1,032 students including 537 boys and 495 girls have been awarded Grade 1 for securing more 90 per cent of marks in Class X, 493 candidates, including 236 boys and 257
girls, figured in the Grade 1 list.

Marksheets of the students have been dispatched to their schools and they will get them by Thursday, Wilson said.

The ISCE does not announce the names of the toppers and refrains from awarding divisions to students.

"We do not have the system of merit list, toppers, division and pass or fail. This has been done to reduce stress among students. I even do not know who has secured the highest mark and which school, he or she belongs to," she said, adding that instead of pass or fail, ISCE uses the term Pass Certificates Awarded and Pass Certificates Not Awarded.

In a special category, 1997 schedule caste students and 1572 tribal students had appeared for the Class X exam and cleared with a pass percentage of 92. About 95 per cent of the 5506 OBC students cleared the Class X.

Similarly in Class XII, 735 schedule caste, 957 schedule tribe and 1,538 OBC students appeared, while the pass rate is 91.29 per cent, 87.67 per cent and 93.56 per cent respectively.

Students of the four schools abroad excelled with 100 per cent pass rate at Class XII and 98.78 per pass rate at Class X.

Students from western and southern regions fared better in both classes, with the pass rate hovering over 96 per cent against the pass rate of 93 per cent by the students of eastern and northern regions.
