MUMBAI: Municipal authorities said that the Mithi banks at Kurla had been nearly fully cleared of unauthorised commercial structures. Deputy Municipal Commissioner VN Kalam Patil said that the area from Bandra-Kurla Complex to CST bridge had been cleared of 704 structures this week—129 of them were demolished on Tuesday. The river widening work had begun by the evening, he added.

However, nearly one lakh cubic metres of silt from the river and debris from the demolition sites was yet to be removed from this stretch, another municipal official admitted. He said that the work was unlikely to meet the May 30 deadline, and might extend up to June 10.

The demolished structures included large metal workshops, godowns, scrapyards, recycling units. Many of the structures were over 1,000 sq.ft in area. Their owners resisted the demolitions despite assurances of resettlement, saying that they wanted as much land as they had lost because of river widening. The state government has already given many land at Mandala in Mankhurd.

Sena not happy: Following the visit of Shiv Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray, Sena leaders in the BMC paid a visit to the river and expressed their displeasure at the work conducted by the Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (MMRDA) at some of the major nullahs flowing into the Mithi River. After inspecting these nullahs on Tuesday, the head of parties drafted a letter to the MMRDA asking it to finish the work before May 25. The delegation from the BMC included Sena leader Sunil Prabhu, standing committee chairman Ravindra Waikar and Mayor Datta Dalvi.
