DUBAI: An accident is a double-whammy for the driver in the Gulf if it causes the death of anyone inside or outside the vehicle. The driver invariably is arrested and put in prison until he can pay compensation or ‘diya money’ for the victim.

That is what happened to Anoop from Kerala and Vinod Chauhan from Rajasthan. Both were involved in a traffic accident in which another Indian national died. Unable to pay the compensation both were doing time in jail.

Until the Indian Community Welfare committee stepped in to reach help.
