NAVI MUMBAI: It’s been only 15 days since power production started at the Dabhol Power Plant—and it’s already spreading smiles across Navi Mumbai. For the last two days, there has been no load shedding at Airoli while power cuts at Vashi and Koparkhairane have reduced.

Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Corporation (MSEDC) executive engineer for Vashi, RD Mundhe said, “Dabhol is certainly playing an important role as there is an increase in power production. But we can never be sure how much and in which areas the load shedding would decrease.”

He said the target for Navi Mumbai was to save 106 MW and the city areas (Airoli - CBD Belapur) were given preference when there was additional power.

The Load Dispatch Centre (LDC) at Kalwa decides the supply of power to Navi Mumbai. “Every morning, the centre informs us about the required hours of load shedding, depending on demand and supply,” Mundhe said.

Kharghar resident Uma Reddy said, “We were continuously reading reports that Dabhol could save us from load shedding, but it’s only when power cuts actually reduced we were able to believe it. Dabhol has saved us at least for a period of one hour.”
