A fire broke out in the basement of the IL&FS 10-storey building in the Bandra-Kurla Complex at 10.15am on Thursday. Police said a short circuit in the electrical panel was the reason behind the fire. The building is situated near the National Stock Exchange and houses a number of financial institutions and offices, including IBM.

D Rodricks, a fire-fighter from Bandra fire station, said “We got a call at 10:30am informing the fire. We immediately reached the spot and quelled the fire within 20 minutes. There was a lot of smoke as the building is made of glass and it was difficult to find the source of the fire.

We located the exact spot of the fire after being equipped with breathing apparatus and torches. Twelve fire engines, four jumbo tankers, a light van and an ambulance were put to service. The building was evacuated before we got there. There must be around 2,000 people in that building. There was a sub-station of  Tata power in the basement.”

Dinesh K, who works at the IL & FS investments office, on the top floor of the ten-storey skyscraper,  said, “At 10am, the computers in our office were shut down. Then we heard that a fire was raging at the basement. We all left the building in a huff. Those who took their office bags along with them went home. Others waited till afternoon to collect their belongings.”

Senior police inspector of the Bandra-Kurla station Arvind Patil said, “Electric cables were burnt because of the fire. There was a short-circuit in the electrical panel of the basement.

No injuries or casualties have taken place. A team of police officers had reached the spot when we were informed about the fire. By 12pm, the fire was completely quelled and fire engines left the spot.”

An employee of IBM said due to short-circuit, the computer systems in their office were not working and it would take a couple of days for systems to be functional again. No one was allowed into the building by security personnel till 3pm.
