DUBAI: Dubai claims it is the first in the world to have an airconditioned bus stop. Whether or it is true, it will be the first in the region to have an AC bus shelter. In the sweltering desert heat that will be a big relief for the expats as most of the Arab nationals rarely take the bus.

Dubai Municipality has announced plans to build 500 crescent shaped AC bus stops in 18 months insulated from the heat outside which will make more people take the public transport fast becoming popular.

The state of the art shelters will have ATMS, vending machines for beverages, newspaper and snacks just as in the airport. The Dh 17.5 million (nearly Rs 20 crore) contract for ten years.

Dubai has taken the lead in modernizing public transport on a par with the world’s best. As the work on Dubai metro is going on in full swing, traffic has been disrupted at several points. But few people are complaining. Now Abu Dhabi has announced that it too has plans for a metro.

The capital metro when implemented will be integrated with the Dubai network and will slash travel time of one and half hours by road between Dubai and Abu Dhabi. It will also be an eco-friendly move. Ahmed Rashed Al Rashedi, Director of Abu Dhabi’s Public Transport Department said the longterm objective was to cut private car ownership by 50 per cent.

There have been talks of a metro network connecting all the six Gulf Cooperation Countries. If that materialises, the  Abu Dhabi metro will integrate with the same.

Attending the launch of the prototype of the airconditioned bus stop at Dubai’s Road Transport headquarters, he said Abu Dhabi will also introduce similar bus shelters. Dubai Municipality in July last year awarded a Dh 12.45 billion ($ 3.4 billion) contract for building the city's 69.7km metro to a consortium headed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Japan.

The deal also includes a Dh 1.88 billion, 15-year, maintenance contract.  Dubai metro will be driverless, fully automated, offering an extremely safe and reliable service with trains which could run as often as one every minute and a half, with stunning views from the elevated sections.

Dubai metro will have 43 stations and the first phase of 52 kms  will be completed by June 2009. Phase two will start in 2007, to be over by 2010. Both will have lines on elevated platforms and underground.
