The Bombay High Court on Friday approved a centralised scheme for admissions to private medical and dental colleges allowing the Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER) to monitor the process at each stage to ensure transparency.

Admissions to all private colleges will be done through the centralised process of the Association of Managements of Unaided Private Medical and Dental Colleges (AMUPMDC) till the last seat is filled. No admissions will be done by individual colleges.

Private colleges not willing to conduct admissions on the basis of the Common Entrance Test (CET) conducted by the Association can opt for the CET conducted by the state government.

Apart from fulfilling the requirements of the Pravesh Niyantran Samiti, the AMUPMDC will be required to submit a copy of the CET merit list to the DMER, which will display it on its website. “The DMER will monitor every stage of the admission process to ensure transparency and merit-based selection,” associate advocate general Ashutosh Kumbhakoni, who was asked by the court to prepare the scheme, said.

The scheme has tried to strike a balance between autonomy of private colleges and the need to ensure transparency was approved by the AMUPMDC and the Parents Association of Medical Students (PAMS).  The scheme provides for all admissions to be completed by September 10.
