NEW DELHI: Close on the heels of wrapping up the first fashion week, the Fashion Design Council of India has announced the next Fashion Week to be held in Delhi in August.

This is the first time that Delhi will witness two Fashion Weeks in a year’s time. Designers have a little over three months time to prepare for the upcoming Spring/Summer showcase.

Though there is excitement about taking the fashion business towards being an organised industry in what is considered a serious B2B event, many feel that there are lessons to be learnt before taking the big leap forward.

“Every Fashion Week we’ve been able to increase business by at least 50 per cent. While we are following international standards in fashion, we may as well learn from them. When a Hong Kong Fashion Week is organised, people know about it well in advance."

"In our current situation we have received short notice, and the short gap between the two fashion weeks does not give buyers ample time to prepare themselves. What’s a fashion week without an adequate number of buyers,” says designer Bobby Grove.

Designers, Rahul Khanna and Rohit Gandhi, who bagged buyers like Tsum from Russia, Sasha and Flower 4 You from Germany, say, Fashion Week has become synonymous with business and more will just be merrier.

“All these years we have only concentrated on the fall collection and that makes us lose out on one complete season. Now with a Spring/ Summer option, the canvas will be wider for us. Although the time to prepare is minimal this time, from next year we will be more organised,” says Khanna.

Although fashion critic Harmeet Bajaj agrees that the timing for the fashion week is not right he says, “Having two fashion weeks is a good idea as it becomes a compulsion for the designer to create a collection for two distinct seasons. Buyers can also plan their budgets according to seasons now, which helps to organise trade overall.”
