MUMBAI: Like in life, so also in death, Bharatiya Janata Party general secretary Pramod Mahajan proved he was headstrong.

The doctors who operated on Mahajan for bullet injuries on Wednesday admitted his brain was functioning extremely well.

The director administration, P D Hinduja Hospital, Dr Anupam Verma told DNA, "It will be improper to say he died because of deterioration in the last 24 hours. He was critical from day one; it caused a system failure."

Dr Verma recounted the 12 days of medical treatment on Mahajan:

His mind was sound. The malfunctioning of the kidney was of least concern. He could have continued on dialysis. It will be improper to say his condition sunk in the last 24 hours.

The main cause of death was multiple organ failure. His body could not adjust to reduction in medicines to stabilise blood pressure. What complicated his condition was the development of acute respiratory distress syndrome in the last 72 hours.

On April 22, Mahajan was operated within seven minutes. Major injuries identified were in his liver and the head of the pancreas. The inferior vena caeva was sewed up. The next challenge was to stop bleeding in the liver. Through surgical intervention, the liver was padded but the bullets were not removed.

He was immediately shifted to the ICU.

On the third day, another operation took place, when the liver packs were removed.

The bleeding stopped. It was followed late at night by washing and cleaning of the abdomen.

On the fifth day there was another operation to insert a feeding tube from the stomach. That was the last operation.

Blood pressure fluctuations continued throughout.

On days seven, eight and nine Mahajan developed acute respiratory distress syndrome, that lead to a deterioration of health.

The dependence on life support machines increased, with his body showing little response to medical treatment or medicines.

The bronchoscopy   conducted on day 11 cannot be termed a major surgery. It was a diagnosis process in the lungs. Between midnight and 2 pm, cleaning and washing of abdomen was carried out to remove infection.

On day 12 he had started sinking. Efforts to revive his respiration through cardio pulmonary resuscitation between 12 and 2 pm failed.

Mahajan died due to multi-organ failure that paralyses the system. Medically, he died at 4.10 pm.
