KATHMANDU: Nepal's political parties appointed the first six people to the cabinet of the new premier Girija Prasad Koirala on Tuesday, a party official said.

The six were the first tranche of appointments and include the key interior, foreign and finance ministries, said the official from the country's largest party, the Nepali Congress.

The appointments confirmed the pre-eminence of Koirala's Nepali Congress party, which secured the interior, finance and agriculture portfolios, the official said on condition of anonymity.

K.P. Sharma Oli, a leader from Nepal's second largest party, the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist) was named to the joint roles of deputy prime minister and foreign affairs minister.

The politicians would be sworn in later on Tuesday at the prime minister's office, the official said.
