MUMBAI: Bharatiya Janata Party leader Pramod Mahajan continues to remain "critical but stable" but doctors on Wednesday said a `positive indication' was that the quantum of drugs being given for maintaining his blood pressure has been gradually reduced.

There is gradual reduction in the quantum of medication being administered to Mahajan for maintaining blood pressure, Anupam Verma, Director (Administration), Hinduja Hospital where the 56-year-old BJP leader is admitted, told reporters here.

Mahajan is tolerating reduction in medication for maintaining the blood pressure well, he said.

Verma said, "it is a positive indication."

"Mahajan continues to be on dialysis and ventilatory support and his condition is critical but stable", Verma said.

Verma said there have been rumours pertaining to Mahajan's health. "If there is any significant change or development to be communicated to media, the hospital authorities will do it directly," he said.

Earlier, Verma said "his (Mahajan's) condition for the last 40 hours has been the same and this we can call stable."

Mahajan was shot at and critically injured by his younger brother Pravin on Saturday. A team of surgeons, led by Dr G V Davar, is monitoring his health condition.

Police have questioned Mahajan's domestic servant on what had transpired between the two brothers on the day of the incident. He told police that he and other family members were inside the house and were not aware of the conversation between Pramod and Pravin.

Police have also recovered a diary from the Thane residence of Pravin which contains names and addresses of close relatives and associates, from which police hope to get clues.

Police have not yet recorded the statement of Rekha, wife of Pramod Mahajan, who was present in the house at the time of the incident.

The blood-stained clothes of Mahajan have been sent to forensic laboratory for testing. The bullets seized by police and .32 bore pistol allegedly used in the shooting have also been sent to Kalina Laboratory here for ballistic analysis and the reports are expected within two weeks, police said.

BJP workers continued to offer prayers at several places for speedy recovery of Mahajan.
