BERLIN: The strongest German opponent to the Indo-US nuclear deal, Foreign Minister Frank Walter Steinmeir, seemed to soften his stand on Monday during his meeting with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

Steinmeir told Singh that his critical remarks, made in Washington a few weeks ago, had more to do with the timing of the deal than its substance. He felt it would queer the pitch for the European Union’s efforts to defuse the nuclear crisis involving Iran.

A foreign office spokesman said Steinmeir told the PM that Germany otherwise sees the deal as an opportunity to bring India on board in meeting IAEA guidelines.

But he held back on full support, saying that when India’s case comes up at the Nuclear Suppliers Group, Germany will ask “constructive questions”.
