NEW DELHI: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) will shortly issue Rs 1,000 denomination banknotes with the letter 'R' inset in both numbering panels in the Mahatama Gandhi Series-2005 with additional security features, bearing the signature of RBI Governor YV Reddy.

Except for the change in the inset letter, the design of these notes to be issued is similar to the banknotes issued earlier in the Mahatama Gandhi series-2005.

All Rs 1,000 denomination banknotes issued by the central bank after the year 2000, will continue to be legal tender.
