JERUSALEM: Comatose Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon will undergo an operation on his skull on Tuesday, said a spokesman for the hospital where he is being treated.

"Prime Minister Ariel Sharon will undergo an operation to restore part of the skull which was perforated during an operation after his brain haemorrhage," said the spokesman for the Hadassah hospital, Ron Krummer.

He said that the surgery "does not mean there is a deterioration in Sharon's health", whose condition is "serious but stable".

The operation comes as Israeli doctors prepare long-term care plans for Sharon, who has been in a coma since he suffered a massive stroke on January 4.

Krummer said last week no final decision had been taken but discussions were continuing on where the 78-year-old premier would have to reside.

The top-selling Yediot Aharonot daily said it had been decided that Sharon would be moved to the Tel Hashomer hospital in the commercial capital of Tel Aviv in two weeks to be cared for in the longer term.

The Jerusalem Post reported at the time that the bone tissue -- amounting to a quarter of his skull -- would be put back in an operation for "aesthetic purposes".

The Yediot Aharonot reported Monday that Israel's cabinet will next week pronounce Sharon permanently incapacitated.    Acting Premier Ehud Olmert, whose Kadima party won Israel's election last week, will be declared head of government at Sunday's cabinet meeting in a decision coming into effect on April 14, it said.
