It has happened again. While the cops in the city were busy in a press conference claiming a major burglary gang bust, unidentified burglars went on a rampage at a flat in Mayfair Eleganza phase II, a cosmopolitan housing society in Kondhwa on Tuesday afternoon. The burglars also attempted another flat in the society but could break open the door.

A similar incident was witnessed on March 6, when chain snatchers had struck at seven places across the city robbing women of gold chains worth Rs2.77 lakh, while the top police officers from 24 districts were in a meeting at Pune police commissionerate to discuss ways to curb the menace.

On Tuesday, the burglars struck at the flat when the occupants were not present and the house was locked. The incident came to light when the owners of the flats returned home in the evening. According to the Kondhwa police, the burglars stole cash worth Rs1.65 lakh and gold ornaments worth Rs1.30 lakh from flat number 303 which is possessed by Mohsin Harun Sheikh (24), a construction contractor. The other flat where the burglary was attempted is flat no 404. In his complaint lodged at the Kondhwa police station, Sheikh said that he and his family members had gone to attend the last rites of a relative when the incident took place.

Sub inspector Karbhari Raut from Kondhwa police station, who is investigating the case, said that Sheikh and his family had left the house on Monday around 2 pm, while the incident came to light when they returned home around 3 pm on Tuesday. He added, “Once inside the flat, the burglars forced open an almirah and ransacked the clothes and other articles kept in it which included the cash and the jewellery.”

The stolen items include two necklaces worth Rs45,000 and Rs37,000, two rings worth Rs13,000 each, a gold chain worth Rs30,000 and a bracelet worth Rs4,500 along with Rs1.65 lakh cash, said the police.

Raut said, “Since burglaries have been taking place in the area, we are trying to sensitize the residents of societies in our jurisdictions. We have been repeatedly making appeals to the housing societies to adopt safety measures and install CCTV cameras. However, most of the societies have yet not installed them.”

He added, “We have launched a manhunt for the culprits. However, we have yet not succeeded in ascertaining the identities of the suspects. Lack of witnesses has slowed down the investigations. We suspect it to be a job of historysheeters and are probing possible involvement of some people who had been arrested in the past for similar crimes. We expect to crack the case soon.”
