Pune: As the Southwest monsoon continues to be in a subdued state in and around Pune, the Pune Municipal Corporation has no option left but to impose harsh decision of providing water on alternate days to Pune. Anticipating water shortage from Monday onwards, some Puneites have already taken steps to curb the water usage. Hostels, gyms, commercial establishments and even college authorities are taking various measures to deal with the water crisis.
Many students and the young working class of Pune stay in hostels. Due to the water cuts, one of the hostels in the city has given additional facilities of drums and pipes to store water instead of using running water. "We have provided drums of 20 litres for each room in our hostel. This is to avoid the use of tankers and also not to put an economic burden of tanker costs on girls," said Nilima Joshi, resident of Sahakar Nagar who owns a girls hostel. She also added that the hostel authorities and hostelites have decided not to wash vehicles and clothes on days when water will not be supplied by PMC.
While it is extremely difficult to keep a check on water usage in every household, some residential complexes have come up with ways to save water. The chairman of Rajmahal society of law college road, Prasad Patankar said, "We have stopped using water for washing vehicles and watering the garden or lawns, until absolutely necessary. In order to minimise the supply of water by tankers, the water will be supplied to houses only on particular timings." The flat owners have already started preparing themselves with extra buckets and drums to store sufficient amounts of water for two days.
Not just residential, but even commercial establishments like gyms and spas need water for showers and steam services but some of them have decided to stop these facilities till water supply of city improves. Approximately 20 to 30 litres of water is easily used for one shower per person. To keep up with the water shortage, a city based gymnasium is introducing "no shower" hours. "With over 360 clients, there is a high requirement of water in the gym. We are requesting batches after afternoon to not shower, avoid taking showers twice a day and use steam only once a week," added Pradeep Kendale, owner of the gym who has put up a banner requesting for the same in his gym.
