Schools in the city have started their admission process after the education department declared the schedule to carry out 25% nursery and kindergarten (KG) admissions under the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education (RTE) Act, 2009.

Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan Kendra director and honorary secretary Nanadkumar Kakirde said, “With the schedule in place, now I can go ahead with 75% of admissions. We will now randomly select the applications that we have already received for our two nurseries in the city. Paranjape Vidya Mandir has 200 seats for mini-KG and Chhabira Nursery at Model Colony has 150 seats. The selection at these centres will take place on December 21 and 22.”

Principal of Dr Kalmadi Shamrao Pre-primary School (Erandwane), Neena Rai said, “The schedule uploaded on the education department website has finally cleared the air on admissions. Now, I can start the process for the remaining 75% seats. I have a pre-school with a capacity of 220 students segregated into six divisions. We will reserve 25% of seats as per RTE.”

Principal of Vikhe Patil Memorial High School, Nandini Charles said, “We will begin the admission process as soon as we get the directives from the education department. There was a lot of confusion earlier. We have junior KG as entry level to our school with a capacity of 160 seats and we will reserve 25% seats as per RTE.”

Seva Sadan Society secretary Madhura Gokhale said, “With no clear directives from the education department regarding the admission process, we had decided to carry out our admissions in March and April. Generally, we begin the process in November-December. We have a mini-KG with 80 seats with two divisions.”

Meanwhile, Modern Pre-primary School and SPM Pre-primary School have decided to start their admission process after holding a meeting with the school management. Modern School principal Lata Welankar said, “We begin the admission process in December, but we have adopted a wait-and-watch policy this year. We will decide the future course of action after meeting the management. We have a mini-KG of 60 seats, but don’t know whether the RTE reservation will cover mini-KG or standard I.”

However, SPM School principal Madhavi Bhadgaonkar admitted that confusion still persists over entry level admissions as per the directives. We have a nursery with 70 seats. We will start our admissions once the picture is clear.”

Abhinav Vidyalaya English Medium School secretary VN Chavan said, “We may begin distribution of admission forms for our mini-KG (Marathi medium) from Monday. But we will have a meeting with the principal before starting the process and then chalk out a detailed plan.”
