Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has spent Rs1.17 crore to hire 40,807 private tankers to supply water in the past two years.

This alleged misuse of public funds came to light through an RTI query filed by Maharashtra Navnirman Sena’s (MNS) Raju Savale on tanker water supply in PCMC.

MNS alleged that the civic body has been providing tanker water to builders and hotel owners.

In response to Savale’s RTI petition, the civic administration informed that PCMC lifts 450 million litres per day (MLD) of water from the Pavana dam for 17.30 lakh population. There are 527 borewells in the twin town, but 244 of them are not in use.

The civic body has also implemented the 24x7 water supply scheme in a few parts of the city.  Citing these figures, Savale said that the civic body spending money on excessive use of water tankers is questionable.

PCMC had appointed six private suppliers to provide water supply in its four zonal wards - A,B,C and D. In Ward-A Sai Enterprises supplied 903 water tankers over the last two years, billing the PCMC with Rs4,23,742.

In Ward-B, Sai Sanskriti and Sudarshan Water Suppliers was appointed to supply 4,779 tankers by spending Rs9,09,750.  In Ward-C, Friends Water Suppliers provided 1,272 tankers charging bill of Rs3,60,693.

In Ward-D, PCMC appointed Sai Sanskriti Enterprises, Sai Enterprises and Friends Water Supplier who supplied 33,853 water tankers and spend Rs99,91,158. MNS alleged that PCMC provided water to these suppliers in minimal rates, but the latter sold it at higher rates to construction sites, industries, hotels etc.

Savale has demanded municipal commissioner Shrikar Pardeshi to take stern action against the tanker lobby. He also demanded installation of water meters at filling centres where these tankers lift water.
