Despite the fact that Union home minister Sushilkumar Shinde had made a categorical statement about specific inputs on Naxal threat to Pune, chief minister Prithviraj Chavan said that there was no discussion on this issue during the meeting of chief ministers from Naxal-infested states in New Delhi.

Addressing mediapersons, Chavan said that prime minister Dr Manmohan Singh had called a meeting of all chief ministers from Naxal-infested states in New Delhi two days ago to discuss the menace. He, however, said that the issue of Naxal threat to Pune was not discussed during the meeting.

When repeatedly asked on Shinde’s revelation about specific information on Naxals making inroads in Pune, Chavan shot back, “You should ask this question to Shinde if he has made such a statement. There was no mention of Pune during the Delhi meeting.”

On whether the state government has any information on Naxal activities in Pune, Chavan said, “I will not divulge any information but there is a threat of left wing extremism to all big cities like Pune, Mumbai and the government is always alert on this.”

LBT opposition

Replying to a question on traders’ opposing Local Body Tax in Mumbai, he said that LBT would be implemented in Mumbai and there has been too much discussion on this issue. He said that the issue is now with the scrutiny committee and Mumbai will have to be prepared for LBT.

Cong-NCP meeting
Facing criticism by the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) that he has no time for Congress-NCP coordination committee meeting, Chavan announced that a formal meeting of the committee would be held soon.

NCP spokesperson Nawab Malik, on Thursday, had criticised Chavan saying that he has been ignoring the demand for a meeting and instead giving time to Shiv Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray for discussing the issue of Race Course land.

Reacting to the criticism, Chavan said, “I give time to those who take my appointment. As far as coordination committee is concerned, the All India Congress Committee in-charge of Maharashtra Mohan Prakash was busy in Gujarat elections and so was the NCP leader Praful Patel.”

Chavan claimed that he meets deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar and discusses all important issues with him on a daily basis.

New airport to come up at Chakan
Chavan made it clear that the proposed international airport in Pune would come up at Chakan and the site would be finalised after the Airports Authority of India (AAI) submits its feasibility report. He also said that the state government would adopt a new policy for the Navi Mumbai airport project and would give land to those whose land would be acquired for the new airport.

The chief minister said that various development projects were discussed during the Planning Commission deputy chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia’s Mumbai meeting and the prime minister has also appointed a high-powered committee on such projects all over the country.
