For the past three months, morning joggers at NIBM-Undri Road are ‘treated’ to sights and sounds that are forcing them to throw up their meals.

One walk down the area and you will find piles of filthy garbage lying around for days and packs of stray dogs attacking. Not to forget the foul smell emancipating in the air and a swarm of flies descending on the heaps.

Its been over three months that residents of NIBM-Undri Road have been complaining about the irregular garbage collection.

“The garbage van comes hardly once a week to collect the garbage from the societies. There are piles accumulated outside societies and it causes mosquitoes and flies to breed besides packs of stray dogs attack the leftover waste. Our children are at risk of mosquito-bred diseases,” said Satya Mani, a NIBM-Undri Road resident.

Besides, the residents claim that careless attitude of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) in waste collection also contributes to the untidiness of the area.

“We have been informing the PMC about the irregular garbage collection but nothing has been done about it yet. After writing letters, the PMC authorities work for for two days and again the situation is the same,” said R Subhramaniam, NIBM Road.

NIBM Road Residents Forum office bearers said that they have sent their third reminder to PMC authorities in this regard and are awaiting a reply.

PMC’s sanitary inspector Manish Nikam said that though there are designated garbage collection vans and workers for the area, lately complaints of residents have increased.

“We are holding a meeting with local mohalla committees representatives and fix the timings of garbage collection vans besides deputing a few more garbage collectors as per the need,” he said.
