Accusing the UPA Government for misleading people on Jan Lokpal Bill, former IPS officer Kiran Bedi on Wednesday announced that she would join social worker Anna Hazare’s indefinite fast from Saturday.

Bedi called on Hazare at Ralegan Siddhi and told him about her decision to join the fast. Hazare initially tried to tell her against fasting but Bedi insisted and announced that she cannot resist her inner voice which tells her that Anna alone cannot sit like this and she has to join him.

Bedi told the media that as soon as Anna launched his indefinite fast on Tuesday morning, minister of state in the Prime Minister’s Office V Narayanasamy, who is also the incharge of the department of personnel, announced that the Jan Lokpal Bill will be passed in the current winter session of Parliament.

Bedi pointed out that the Bill is awaiting discussion in Rajya Sabha and the opposition is willing to suggest a few amendments. In such a scenario, Bedi said, “In the first place, the discussion on Jan Lokpal Bill does not figure in the list of business for Rajya Sabha and the government was lying that it will pass it.”

Bedi demanded that the government should first bring the issue in the list of business and take it up for discussion. She demanded that the Opposition should press for bringing this issue. She also demanded that the amended Bill would need a nod from Lok Sabha and a special session of one day should be called for passing this all-important bill.

Bedi said that when a veteran like Anna is giving everything for the nation, she cannot wait anymore and would join Anna’s fast from Saturday.

She said, “I have cancelled all appointments for joining Hazare from Saturday. I don’t have any experience of fasting and have never kept any fast even on Karva Chauth in my life. I don’t know what will happen on fasting day and if at all my health deteriorates they can take me to hospital but I will not withdraw from fasting.”

When asked by the media about Arvind Kejriwal leaving Hazare alone, Bedi refused to comment.

“Anna is not alone since the entire country and Aam Aadmi is behind him,” she said. When a scribe said that Kejriwal is no more an Aam Aadmi, Bedi said, “Har Ek Ne Apne Antaratma Ki Awaj Sunni Chahiye (Everyone should listen to his or her own conscience).

Kejriwal arriving

AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal, while reacting to Anna Hazare’s fast said, “We salute Anna Hazare’s movement and we are with him in his endeavour to get the Jan Lokpal Bill passed. We will go and meet him on Thursday but will sit in the crowd.”
