Google has announced its decision to offer wireless service to Nexus 6 owners through a new program called, 'Project Fi.'

The tech giant wrote in a blog post, "Similar to our Nexus hardware program, Project Fi enables us to work in close partnership with leading carriers, hardware makers, and all of you to push the boundaries of what's possible," reported The Verge.

The service can only be availed on Google's Nexus 6 devices, both new and old ones, by using a special SIM card for Project Fi. The company said that the service is only available as an "early access program" and during that program it will not work on other phones.

Consumers will only have to pay for the data they use rather than a flat monthly fee that comes with a preset amount of data. If you fail to use the data you've paid for, Google will refund you the difference.

The service will support voice calls and texting over Wi-Fi. It will also allow you to switch seamlessly between LTE and a Wi-Fi network in order to ensure that you are connected to the fastest available network at your location.

Google has said that it will send out a limited number of invites every week starting now.
