Thieves cock a snook at Pune police by stealing a moped and a motorcycle of two cops from Pune police commissioner office on Wednesday.

Even as the owners of the stolen moped and bike is a sub-inspector (PSI) ranked officer of Pune crime branch and a constable attached with cyber crime cell, the entire department will have to face the shame.

The fact that the spot where the duo had parked their two-wheelers close to the commissioner office’s gate number 3 on Wednesday morning is manned round the clock by three cops armed with AK-47 will definitely not give top cops much relief.

Even as the Pune police are crying hoarse for making CCTV coverage mandatory at jewellery shops and malls etc, investigators will face a handicap as no such facility is installed on the outer side of the commissioner’s office.

With the top brass making helmet mandatory for cops entering the premises of commissioner office, many park their vehicles close to gate number 3 citing neck problem for not using the head gear. Speaking to dna, one of the victims who’s vehicle has been stolen said, “The commissioner’s office does not have adequate space for motorcycle parking. As I don’t use helmet because of neck problem, I park my motorcycle near gate number 3.”

Preferring to take an ostrich-like approach, joint commissioner of police (law and order) Sanjeev Kumar Singhal told dna, “I am unaware about the theft.” Without admitting that damage has already been done, Singhal said, “Yes installing CCTV is crucial for security reasons. We will immediately install six to seven cameras at the outer side of the office.”
