Pune: The next time you are travelling on the Pune- Mumbai Expressway, make sure you are wearing your seat belt. The highway traffic police is all set to take strict action against those found driving without seat belts from next week.
The highway superintendent claims that non-usage of seat belts was the primary reason behind 46 per cent of fatal road accident injuries on the e-way between October 2012 and October 2013.
During the same period, as many as 214 road accidents were reported. Out of these, 98 turned out to be serious ones.
Superintendent of police (highway traffic) Rashmi Karandikar, said, “Apart from overspeeding and not observing lane discipline, many a times, people do not wear seat belts. This is one of the major reasons for deaths in road accidents. It takes less than half a minute to put a seat belt, but people do not want to make this small effort which can save lives.”
Karndiakr added, “We have decided to take strict action against drivers who do not wear seat belts. Apart from the toll plaza, highway traffic cops will be checking vehicles in the ghat section which have defined accident prone zones. Those who are caught not using seat belts will have to pay a fine of Rs300.”
Well-known Marathi actor, the late Akshay Pendse’s, younger brother Tanmay Pendse has been working on the safety of the expressway. He said, “Taking action
against people who do not wear seat belts will not help. The highway traffic officials should emphasise on things that people should not do while travelling on expressway—like not stopping on
the expressway and not changing lanes without giving indications, among others. Only then will the increasing number of accidents come down.”
