The Shivajinagar police headquarters is a busy hub of tough cops controlling the crime scene in the city. With 2,000 of them present in and around the premises, you could say security there is foolproof.

Not really, for a sandalwood tree on the premises of the headquarters was stolen in the early hours of Tuesday. The thieves apparently had no problem entering the premises and noting the sandalwood tree. Similarly, cutting it down and carrying it away from the police headquarters was easy for them.

The stolen sandalwood tree has been estimated to be worth Rs20,000.

More interestingly, deputy commissioner of police (DCP) (headquarters) Shirish Sardeshpande, claimed that the headquarters has adequate security. When asked about the theft of the sandalwood tree, he said he was not aware of any such incident.

The incident came to light when police constable Satish Balasaheb Jamdade (38), while entering the headquarters premises on Tuesday morning, noticed that the sandalwood tree was missing.

He lodged a complaint against the unidentified persons at Shivajinagar police station.

The tree, which was 12 ft tall with a width of almost three inches, was cut and taken away from the busy headquarters, without the sentries noticing it.

Inadequate security, says audit report

The security audit of Pune police commissionerate carried out by the special branch recently raised serious concerns about the security of Shivajinagar police headquarters. The report states that the headquarters, which houses the armoury, has inadequate security. The audit report shows that the security at the police headquarters is compromised mainly due to the inadequate number of guards to man all entry and exit points, absence of proper compound wall and lack of CCTV camera coverage.
