While the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is facing a financial crunch, corporators held the civic administration responsible for low revenue collection.

Congress corporator Avinash Bagwe on Tuesday claimed that the PMC incurred a loss of Rs800 crore as the PMC failed to charge MSEDCL the correct amount due for digging up roads.

At the general body meeting, Bagwe claimed there is disparity between the records obtained by the civic administration and the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL), which shows that the PMC showed lesser road was dug up and hence lesser charges were taken from the MSEDCL over the last three years.

Bagwe said, “The information obtained from the PMC states that the total 232 run metres of road was dug up by the MSEDCL. However when the same information was obtained from the MSEDCL, it showed that they had dug up 1,413 run metres road for laying of electric cables in last three years.”

“The information clearly states that the civic administration has charged for digging only 232 run metres instead of 1,413 metres of digging work. If we calculate the monitory loss, there is a loss of Rs299 crore and with three times penalty for outstanding amount, the loss goes to Rs800 crore, which PMC has incurred,” Bagwe said.

Shiv Sena corporator Prithviraj Sutar demanded stringent action against the officers who were supposed to collect the digging charges from MSEDCL.

Reacting to the claim, Srinivas Bonala, additional city engineer said, “We will check both the data verify it and if we find difference in the information, we will collect the outstanding charges.”
Mahesh Pathak, municipal commissioner, said, “If discrepancies are found in the information obtained from PMC and MSEDCL, action will be taken against officers concerned.”
