Youth held for kidnap, bid to kill 4-year-old in Pune

The Bharati Vidyapeeth police on Saturday night arrested a 19-year-old youth, Sainath Balasaheb Raut, for allegedly kidnapping a 4-year-old boy Pranav Chinchne for ransom and attempting to kill him.

The Bharati Vidyapeeth police on Saturday night arrested a 19-year-old youth, Sainath Balasaheb Raut, for allegedly kidnapping a 4-year-old boy Pranav Chinchne for ransom and attempting to kill him. The victim’s father, Mahadev, 26, of Mangdewadi, lodged a complaint with the police in this regard.

The police rescued the child eight hours after the incident from a waste dumping spot in Katraj Ghat, where he was abandoned.

The police said Chinchne on Saturday afternoon got a call from a public telephone booth demanding Rs1 lakh as ransom, failing which the Marathi-speaking abductor threatened to kill the child.

During interrogation, Raut confessed to having kidnapped and attempting to kill him.

4 held for dacoity bid
The Yerawada police on Saturday busted a gang of five men planning to commit dacoity at a petrol pump on Pune-Ahmednagar Road. The police recovered a countrymade pistol, five live cartridges and sharp-edged weapons from Shashikant alias Bitya Dada Kamble, 28, of Yerawada, Raju Narayan Dhotre, 36, of Vishrantwadi, Suresh Bhaskar Pawar, 23, of Parner in Ahmednagar and Dasharath Khandu Waghmode, 33, of Chinchwad. They were remanded in police custody till March 15.

7 bookies held in raids
In a joint operation against betting on cricket, the anti-terrorist cell sleuths and the crime branch of Pune police on Saturday arrested seven people and seized cash, laptops, TV sets and cellphones, in two separate raids in Pimpri and Kondhwa area. The arrested have been identified as Paras Jain, 64, of Guruwar Peth, Mukesh Agarwal, 34, of Dapodi, Sanjay Mittal, 39, of Chinchwad, Ram Bajaj, 37, of Pimpri and Gopi Israni, 42, of Pimpri. The police also recovered Rs71,000 from their possession.

Three hurt in mishap
A truck plying on the Katraj-Kondhwa Road on Sunday evening ploughed into a roadside house, injuring three of a family, Anand Dhudekar, Shobha and Shruti. The police said the driver lost control on the steep slope, collided with two autorickshaws and a car, before crashing.
