Tata Power organised a programme on Energy Conservation and Safety at their TATA Power Plant in TROM for high school students of Sri Ma Balniketan School, Thane(East) on Saturday. The 39 students who attended the seminar are a part of the Tata Power Energy Club, a unique initiative by company for the conservation of energy through school children.

According to Tata Power, 2.8 million units of electricity have been saved till date by the club members.

“By getting into the minds of young heads and moulding them into responsible citizens, we conduct workshops for children once or twice a month throughout the year to spread awareness and help conserve energy through interactive sessions. We encourage them to inculcate the same into the people around them by awarding titles to all those who have saved noticeable amounts of electricity,” said Shibu George, the head operations engineer, Tata Power.

He also added that the company have taken initiatives to encourage their employees to go green too. Employees who have saved whopping amounts of energy or taken up initiatives for conservation are awarded on a timely basis.

The school kids liked the way the statistics were broken down for them.“The facts were broken down and that made it easy for us to realise that the country is in dire need to curb energy,” said Vinit Pawar, one the students who attended  the workshop.

A special competition is conducted to ensure that the kids save energy. “The concept of energy club is brilliant. We have to produce our monthly electricity bills and if there is a reduction in consumption, then the person is awarded the ‘Energy Champion’ title with their name on the website,” said Ameya Joshi, another student.

The entire presentation was very informative and well executed. We teachers too learned many things that we were unaware of. The children were so into it that they were eager to get back to the presentation during the five minute break. They will surely spread the word and take steps towards this noble initiative,” said Mohini Pol, one  of the three teachers who attended the seminar. Subhadra Bhowmick and Beena Suresh, the other teachers, also added that more of such initiatives should be taken up and that they would appreciate another chance to bring the school children to such seminars.
