A 27-year-old woman has been arrested for allegedly stealing an ATM card from the purse of a woman at CST. The woman had also purchased clothes and jewellery worth Rs30,000 by using the stolen card.

The accused has been identified as Nisha Raghunath Kurtadkar, a resident of Chembur. According to police, the incident took place on June 17 when Aruna Bansode, a Chembur resident, was walking near the CST area.

“When she checked the purse, she was shocked to found that her ATM card was missing. Bansode then intimated about this to the concerned bank,” said an officer from the Azad Maidan police station.

The officer said that when Bansode visited the Marine Drive branch of the bank on Saturday to update her passbook she was informed by the bank officials that purchases worth Rs30,000 were made from her ATM card. “Purchases of clothes worth Rs7,650 and Rs2,750 were made from shops in the suburbs. Ornaments worth Rs14,545 were purchased from a jewellery shop,” the police said.

“We first went to the jewellery shop and made inquiries about the purchase. The jewellery shop officials provided us the CCTV footage wherein the culprit was seen clearly.

The said CCTV feed was then showed to the other shops. Officials of the Arihant Collection told us that the said customer had informed them that she wanted to change the purchased clothes and would come on Saturday evening,” said the officer.

The police then laid a trap at around 8.30pm near the shop and apprehended Kurtadkar when she reached the shop. The accused is presently under the police custody.
