The Western Railway (WR) recently carried out major operations against touts selling illegal tickets at various places in the city.

It was found that most of the passengers travelling on illegal (non-transferable) tickets were either on their way to or coming from New Delhi and Uttar Pradesh.

According to SS Gupta, chief public relations officer of the WR, during the month of May, 234 passengers were found travelling on non-transferable tickets. “All these passengers were travelling on illegal tickets between May 16 and May 29. The routes which suffered the most included Bandra Terminus- Hajrat Nijamuddin Sampark Kranti Express and Ahmedabad-Jammu Tavi Express.

Offences were registered against them and a fine of Rs1,84,851 was collected,” said Gupta.

A drive was carried out in April when checks were carried out against illegal ticketing agents, said Gupta. “Four persons were handed over to the Railway Protection Force and tickets worth Rs52,122 were confiscated,” he said.

Gupta said they have been conducting raids even in the first week of June.
