The Malwani police on Saturday arrested a 40-year-old watchman for raping a seven-year-old girl who used to live close to his residence. This is the sixth incident of rape involving a minor in the city in this week alone. The accused and the
victim are both residents of Malwani.

According to the police, on Friday, when the victim was playing with her siblings outside her house, the watchman, Kayyum Mohamed Khan, lured her to his home. Kayyum was alone at home, as his wife and children had gone to visit his parents. After raping the girl, Khan allegedly beat her up and threatened her with dire consequences if she told anybody about what had happened.

It was only on Saturday, however, that the incident came to light. When the victim's mother was bathing her in order to get her ready for school, the youngster cried out in pain. When her mother asked her what had happened, the victim narrated the incident following, which her parent reported the matter to the Malwani police.

Acting on the woman's complaint, the police arrested Khan from his residence, and charged him with rape and assault. When the police asked the girl if Khan had ever raped her before, she said no. But the police are now conducting enquiries to see if Khan has raped or assaulted anyone else in the past. The police have sent the girl and Khan to Nagpada Hospital for a medical examination.
