Vigilance committees to monitor road repair work in Mumbai

Maharashtra Government today asked the BMC, MMRDA and PWD to immediately fill the potholes on Mumbai's roads within two days and announced setting up of ward wise vigilance committees comprising high level officials to monitor the work.

Textile Minister Mohammed Arif Naseem Khan, who is the guardian Minister of Mumbai suburban district convened a meeting of MMRDA, BMC and PWD officials to discuss the issue of potholes on Mumbai's roads which is causing hardships to commuters during monsoons.

He said the vigilance committees comprising of officials would monitor the roads on daily basis and if a new pothole is created, committee would ensure that it is filled in 24 hours.

Khan said there are about 6,000 potholes out of which 4,500 are in Mumbai's suburbs. "Due to this, there are traffic snarl and people are put to severe inconvenience.

The minister said there are complaints about the quality of work. "Action should be taken against such contractors and if needed they should be blacklisted," he said.

The minister said all roads should be repaired before the Ganesh chaturthi festival next month.
