Upset with Mumbai suburban district guardian minister Mohammad Aarif Naseem Khan's intervention in the recent agitation called by autorickshaw drivers, a non-governmental organisation has written a letter to UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi demanding his ouster.

Citing a state government resolution, the Society for Awareness of Civil Rights said Khan had interrupted the regional transport office’s (RTO) drive against faulty meters and this amounted to stopping a government servant from carrying out his duty.

RP Yajurvedi Rao, president of the NGO, claimed that Khan had called a senior RTO official to his personal office at Bail Bazaar in Kurla.

“As per the government notification, no guardian minister can intervene when a government official is carrying out his or her duty,” said Rao.

“The minister can call officials to his personal office if he is conducting a Janata Darbar for which a notice has to be given in advance. Khan did not adhere to this rule and lambasted the officials who were checking the faulty meters. Hence, our NGO has written a letter to his party president Gandhi demanding his ouster.”

The letter also alleged that Khan was involved in acts of “omissions and commissions”  while stopping RTO officials from checking faulty metres.

“Such high handedness in running the government should not be tolerated at all. If on-duty government officials duty are not protected and respected, it sends a wrong signal to the public and miscreants who can take advantage of such situation to create law and order problems,” the letter said.

Despite several attempts, Khan did not respond to calls.
His office staff in Kurla said that they were not authorised to talk to the media.
