A wine shop employee at Parel in central Mumbai was today shot at allegedly by two unidentified assailants, who came to the shop on the pretext of buying alcohol, police said.

Ajit Panjwani, 32, employee at London Wine Shop, was shot at three rounds by one of the two unidentified men, who managed to escape from the scene despite being chased by a police constable, police added.

According to police, the two men went to the shop this morning when one of them asked for alcohol, holding Rs50 in his hand.

"All of a sudden, one of the two opened fire, pumping three bullets in Panjwani. He was rushed to civic run KEM hospital where he is undergoing treatment in ICU unit. He is out of danger," said additional police commissioner Vineet Agrawal.

Hearing bullet shots' sound, the police constable, patrolling the area, ran towards the shop when he saw one of the assailants, he added.

The constable chased the accused but in vain, he said adding that "Preliminary probe suggest that robbery was not the motive behind the attack."

"One fire arm slipped from the accused's hands and fell on the ground. We have recovered the fire arm which appears to be country-made pistol," he said.

Further probe was on.
