The machines for enrollment for unique identification number (UID) in the city have been increased from 87 to 112. Over 1.32 lakh citizens in the city have enrolled till May 31.

Deputy municipal commissioner Praveen Ashtikar said the target is to complete the registration of estimated 32 lakh citizens of the city by March 31, 2012. The facility has been made available in all the 14 ward offices of Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).

“A total of 381 machines are needed for the project,” he said.

Municipal commissioner Mahesh Pathak had recently reviewed the enrolment programme and gave instructions to immediately increase the number of machines.

The PMC is working as a facilitator for the project, whose contract has been given to three private companies, Wipro, Terasoft and Smartchip.

To get the UID, citizens have to visit the centre and fill know your residence (KYR) forms. They have to provide identity and residence proofs along with the form. Once the documents are found satisfactory, iris scanning (electronic scanning of the round coloured part that surrounds the pupil of eye) would be done. Fingerprints of all ten fingers of the citizen would be recorded and photograph would also be clicked.

The data of fingerprint, photograph, iris scanning and those provided in the application will be recorded and citizens will be given acknowledgement receipts. Later, citizens will be sent a letter by UID authority to inform the 12-digit number after about a month, according to an official.
