A picnic went horribly wrong when two Pune-based youths drowned in the famous Bhushi dam in Lonavla on Monday afternoon.
The deceased have been identified by Deepak Potdar (32) and Bhagyashree Undane (26), residents of Parvati area in Sahakarnagar. While Potdar was the executive editor of a Marathi newspaper, Bhagyashree was working as a computer operator in a local firm. According to senior inspector Vishnu Pawar of Lonavla city police, Deepak, Bhagyashree and two others, Abhishek Ranade (21) and an unnamed woman, had gone to the dam on an impromptu picnic.
Abhishek, in his statement to the police, said that Deepak had organised the picnic. Both Bhagyashree and the unnamed woman had apparently not informed their parents regarding the picnic.
Once the two couples reached the dam, Deepak, Abhishek and the unnamed woman went for a swim. Bhagyashree sat on the rocks. When neither of them showed any sign of emerging from the water even after two hours, Bhagyashree stood up to call them. However, she slipped and fell into the water. Deepak swam immediately to save her. However, Bhagyashree clung on to him in sheer desperation. Deepak apparently lost control and both drowned in the dam.
