Did you know that euouaes is an actual word and not just someone trying to sing? If you did, either you’re lying or you’re a word genius. And if you didn’t then maybe it is time you realise how much fun words can be. Just ask the members of the Pune Scrabble Club who know the meaning of euouaes, tzaddiq, ki, ja, cazique and many other such outlandish words.

The Pune Scrabble Club members meet every Tuesday at Poona Club and also organise regular tournaments for the word aficionados. Scrabble for them is much more than just a board game — more exciting and unpredictable and a great way to improve the vocabulary.

Romilla Thakur, one of the founders, elaborated on the benefits that the game can offer. “Scrabble has helped me learn so many new words, I would have never otherwise remembered just by reading it. It also keeps your memory sharp and active”, she claimed.

The Pune Chapter’s origin traces back to 1998 when neighbours and friends, Neena Shahani and Manju Pai, decided to test their word making skills in a tournament in Mumbai. Neena recalls the excitement of winning the 13th slot in her first competitive Scrabble tournament and a scrabble set, which she treasures to date. “It brought out the competitive spirit in us and we decided to share the fun. We have been playing this game with others in Pune”, Neena said.

Neena and Manju, along with Romilla, roped in other like-minded individuals and laid the foundation of the Scrabble Club in the city.

The club now has 20 regular members whose age range from 16 to 70 and who come from different professions, but with a common passion for words. They challenge themselves with timers and keep score and trying to utilise the inventive words they have learnt.

Collins Words List 2007 is used for verifying the words and this is the official scrabble dictionary used at all international tournaments. “It has become an addiction for us and playing scrabble once a week is not enough”, admits Romilla, who heads to the nearest Barista whenever the urge to create words on the board and triple her word score possesses her. Neena, on the other hand, still continues the tradition of playing scrabble with her long-time friend Manju, despite the fact that the latter is now in Canada.

“Playing scrabble online is still fun but the important social element is missing”, says Neena, “but our meetings and tournaments make up for it.”

The coming tournament, the Pune Scrabble Challenge 2011, on March 19 and 20, promises to be a fun event added with a dash of education. An open tournament, it will include participants from all over India, with many rated scrabble players who will try their luck in wordplay to win the prize money and the coveted title.

So if you want to learn the multifarious words, you should think of trying Scrabble instead of Google.
