President Pratibha Patil inaugurated the SevenHills Hospital at Marol, Andheri (East), on July 4.

But soon it may cease to exist unless its authorities abide by the conditions laid down by the BMC.

The plot of land on which the SevenHills, reputed to be Asia’s largest private multi-super specialty hospital, stands belongs to the BMC.

The civic body gave it to the hospital trust in 2002, spelling out conditions that the latter must fulfil. Now, with the trust trying to evade some of the conditions, the BMC may scrap the agreement and take back the land. And it will be curtains for the hospital.

The BMC had laid down six conditions while entering a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the hospital trust. Treating poor patients is one of the things the hospital must do, as per the MoU. But the trust allegedly is playing hookey.

“If the hospital does not abide by all six conditions, the BMC will reopen the proposal and ask the commissioner to take back the land,” Sunil Prabhu, Shiv Sena leader in the BMC, said on Thursday.

According to him, the hospital trust is trying to evade three of the six conditions. They are: Poor patients should be billed medicines as per the rates at BMC hospitals, 20% of beds in the ICU should be reserved for the BMC, and the board of directors of the hospital should have two representatives from the civic body — one corporator and an official.

Prabhu said that the plot given to the hospital had been originally reserved for a cancer hospital. So, Seven Hills should keep 10% of its beds reserved for cancer patients.

“If the hospital does not abide by these conditions, we will reopen the proposal on July 16. If the general body decides to take back the land, we will buy out the hospital by paying Rs193 crore for the structure,” he said.
