On Monday, Unit IX of the Mumbai crime branch arrested  a man who had escaped from the Borivali lockup about eight months ago. Two other inmates had escaped with him. The arrested has been identified as Rizwan Noormohammad Monsoori, alias Raghu, 26, a resident of Mumbra. He was arrested at Bandra terminus, on a tip-off.

A crime branch officer said, in April this year, Rizwan Mansoori, Ritesh Rajbhar and Jitesh Dusangi managed to flee from the Borivali metropolitian court jail. Mansoori had been arrested on charges of chain snatching, while Rajbhar and Dusangi were behind bars for breaking and entering.

“Soon after entering prison, Mansoori noticed that the latch on the back door of the lockup could be opened easily, as it was fitted into the wall in a very small hole,” said senior police inspector Sanjay Satardekar of Unit IX.

“He told the other inmates to stand near the front door, so that the guard on duty would not see him. He pushed the back door several times, and the latch broke. All three fled,” said Satardekar.

“Upon discovery, the news, along with their description, was immediately relayed to all the police stations. Two days later, Rajbhar and Dushangi were arrested in Dahisar, and Mansoori fled to Gujarat,” added the officer.

“Mansoori is a habitual chain snatcher and was allegedly involved in more than 20 cases in Mumbai and Gujarat,” said investigating officer Deepak Sawant.
