It is not clear if it is the tantra effect, but Hasmukh Rathod is rather relaxed for someone in police custody over a rape case. “Tantrik Rathod is more worried about his business and clientele than the police investigation,” says a senior police official on condition of anonymity. Apparently, the tantrik is well connected, through some high profile clients, and is confident of getting bail in the second remand in court. “He even told the investigating officer as much,” added the official.

Perhaps the fact that the Mira Road police have made little progress in the investigations has something to do with the tantrik's optimism. According to sub-divisional police officer Maithili Jha, the accused trio — the tantrik, Kishor Chauhan, and his wife Anjana — are not cooperating with the investigation. “Today we conducted some specific medical tests on all three, and the reports are awaited. The victimised girls have also undergone some medical tests,” said Jha. The police are also checking to see if some more families have been cheated by the tantrik. “As per our information he has some high profile clients,” said Jha.

On the other hand, Rathod's son Rajeev, 21, visited his him in custody only once, bringing him his diamond rings. “He didn't even request the police to show some leniency towards Hasmukh Rathod,” added a senior police officer.

All three accused were produced in the court of first class judicial magistrate AT Kale on Saturday. Demanding an extension in police custody, advocate SN Kothavale, on behalf of the police, told the court that the accused did not cooperate with the police during medical tests.  However, defence lawyer Edgar Braganza sought judicial custody for the accused. Acceding to the police's request, Justice Kale has extended the police custody remand to March 26.
