The site was being developed by Sudhakar Shetty, owner of the infamous Deepa Bar in Vile Parle that has been closed for the past two years.
This is the second incident of firing related to Shetty. Three years ago, two men allegedly belonging to the Pujari gang had fired outside Deepa Bar, injuring a watchman.
According to police records, Monday’s incident happened around 11:30am. Two men, aged around 30, entered the Sahana construction site near Amboli, Andheri (West) in the guise of executives of a courier company.
“They told the guard not to come into the cabin that they entered,” said a crime branch official.
There were five people at the construction site, the official said. The witnesses are understood to have told investigators that the assailants, before firing bullets, asked Kude and Devrasi why their phone calls were not being answered.
“The bullets were fired at point-blank range,” said deputy police commissioner KMM Prasanna. Kude, who sustained bullet injuries on one of his eye lids, was declared ‘brought dead’ by Criticare Hospital in Juhu. Devrasi, who was injured in the back, died later.
Police officers said that the accused left an envelope before fleeing. The envelope bore Pujari’s name and a cell phone number.
“When we called back on the number, it was found to be switched off,” said an official involved with the investigation.
Yasmin Sheikh, owner of the plot where the incident took place, said that construction was moving at snail’s pace since it was started three years ago.
