If you are a resident of Bandra or Khar, you may soon have, or might have already had, college students knocking on your door to check on your water and electricity conserving habits.

The students of RD National College, Bandra, have embarked on a community awareness and assessment survey program. Students are going door-to-door to survey how residents of private houses and housing societies are contributing towards saving water and environment.

Principal Dinesh Panjwani is the brain behind the project. “The purpose is to gauge whether the citizens’ needs are being met by the government, and also to assess whether citizens are doing their bit to conserve the nature and its resources,” Panjwani said.

The programme kicked off in October, with nearly 3,000 students, along with their teachers, taking part in it. Nearly 2,000 housing societies have already been surveyed. The students have sought permission to survey 1,000 more societies.

“We have made posters and interview sheets. Booklets giving tips about water and electricity conservation and information about the project have been distributed among residents. By the end of May, we will be through with surveying 3,000 housing societies and 30,000 residents,” the principal said. “We will then analyse the survey, and send detailed reports to the BMC and the police.

Students said that the project had taught them more than any classroom lecture. “We have had doors shut on our face, rude watchmen abusing us, treating us like beggars and hawkers. But we have also met people who encouraged and appreciated us for taking up the project,” Nirav Shah, an FYBcom student, said. “If we have succeeded in curbing the extravagant habits of at least one society, we would consider that our efforts have paid off.”

Senior lecturer Neha Jagtiani said, “While surveying the housing societies, we have also asked about senior citizens living alone in flats, the preventive assistance provided to them by the societies, etc. The report will throw light on the citizens’ awareness about significant issues.”
