The city police department has decided to crack the whip on overweight policemen by ordering them to report to an obesity clinic in the Nagpada police hospital and get into shape.

Previously, the hospital had twice requested obese police officials to get medical treatment, but few showed up.

This time, the hospital administration decided to send a fresh circular through the joint commissioner of police (administration).

There are around 40,000 officials in the police department.
The objective of this clinic is to treat and control rising cases of obesity and its related problems — hypertension and diabetes.

Last year the hospital purchased a special Body Composition Analyser. It provides a detailed body composition analysis — weight, impedance, body fat per cent, body mass index, fat mass, fat-free mass and more, all without the inconvenience of more intrusive traditional methods.

This machine helps patients understand what is going on inside their body by categorising weight into muscle mass, water, and body fat.

According to sources, the policemen did not take the hospital circulars seriously, and therefore the hospital decided to take help of the police administration to force the officials to undergo treatment.

“We are sure overweight policemen will not underestimate a department circular if it comes from a senior police authority. This clinic helps patients with weight-related problems to make better-informed decisions about their behaviour. It helps them see the usefulness of their treatment programme —  especially relevant if obesity-related medication is part of the programme,” said a hospital source.

The clinic has also hired nutritionists to ensure a healthy diet for the policemen. An expert on obesity problems will be available once a week to assist with health check-ups.

However, barely five to six policemen  have visited the clinic in the last six months.

“Hence we are sending instructions through the joint commissioner of police (administration) to the entire force to take the advantage of this obesity clinic facility,” said Dr SM Patil, police surgeon, Nagpada police hospital.

“All the police stations in the metro will soon receive a circular, saying that every year obese policemen must visit the clinic and work towards resolving their weight problem.”
