Good news. There are 11,000 more students from the Mumbai division than last year who are sitting the higher secondary certificate (HSC) examinations. But what’s sauce for the gander isn’t sauce for the goose. Evaluators worry that the rise in the number of candidates will add to their workload.

Anil Deshmukh, president of the Junior College Teachers’ Association, elaborated on the grouse. “Earlier, evaluators used to get 200 answer sheets. But the number has been increasing every year. This year, we are getting more than 300 answer sheets, despite the promise by the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education’s previous chairperson’s of sticking to 200. For mathematics and economics papers, the figure is likely to rise to 550.”

He added that since the state board expects an evaluator to be through with his/her workload in 10 days, the chances of errors creeping in are bound to go up.

“The board has started sending more than 300 answer sheets for evaluation and we fear that even moderators will get more than 5,000 answer sheets, which is impossible to check in 10 days. When the board takes two months to prepare the results, why are we given only 10 days (to evaluate papers)?” asked another teacher.

Deshmukh suggested that the board should have roped in over 1,000 teachers from unaided schools to ease our burden,” said Deshmukh, who claimed that members of the association will sit on a dharna on Azad Maidan on Thursday in protest.

A total of 3.11 lakh students from the Mumbai division are writing their HSC examinations this year.
